THE REVIEW
Build Experience

At 86 pieces and targeted at ages 6+, you might expect to breeze through this in ten minutes and feel nothing. But the McLaren City F1 car has a surprisingly thoughtful build for its size. The curved hood sections stack in a way that teaches a basic but real technique โ€” angled plate stacking for aerodynamic slope. It builds in under 20 minutes but earns a second look.

Technique Value

Limited by its scale, but the curved nose assembly is genuinely well-designed โ€” a 2ร—2 curved slope over a 1ร—2 brick gives exactly the right taper. For newer builders studying how LEGO approximates curves, this is a clean, low-part example to examine. Don't dismiss small sets as technique-free.

Parts Haul

86 pieces at City scale doesn't overwhelm the parts bin, but the papaya orange elements โ€” especially the curved 2ร—2 slopes โ€” are useful for any builder working in warm orange tones. Black wheel arches and the McLaren-printed driver helmet are useful additions. Best viewed as a budget entry into the F1 City parts ecosystem.

Display Quality

Surprisingly good for the price point. The McLaren's distinctive papaya orange reads immediately and the car has a planted, low-slung stance on a shelf. It's small โ€” 14cm long โ€” but that makes it a great desk companion without eating real estate. Sits well beside larger Speed Champions sets for scale contrast.

Value for Money

.99 for a licensed McLaren F1 set with a driver minifig is genuinely exceptional. The price-per-piece is higher than ideal (about .15/pc) but for an impulse gift, stocking stuffer, or quick build session, it earns its spot. Best value in the City F1 range on a dollars-to-smiles basis.

THE GOOD
  • โœ“ Perfect papaya orange livery
  • โœ“ Excellent stocking stuffer price
  • โœ“ McLaren driver minifig included
  • โœ“ Better build technique than it looks
ROOM TO IMPROVE
  • โœ— Limited parts haul at 86 pieces
  • โœ— Very small โ€” some may want more
The Earl's Verdict
If you're an F1 fan, an McLaren fan, or you just want to spend on something that will sit happily on your desk, this is the one. Don't skip it because it's small.
